Xavi Hernandez Appoints Dumfries as Netherlands' Second Captain

Xavi Hernandez, the new head coach of the Netherlands national team, has named Denzel Dumfries as the second captain for the current international break, directly behind Virgil van Dijk in the leadership hierarchy. This announcement was made ahead of the Netherlands' UEFA Nations League match against Germany.

Van Dijk retains the captaincy, having confirmed his commitment to the national team after discussions with Xavi. Dumfries, who has 76 international appearances, is recognized for his experience and leadership qualities, especially with Frenkie de Jong unavailable.

Following Dumfries in the leadership order are Nathan Aké and Cody Gakpo. Xavi aims for experienced players to assist younger squad members, including new call-ups Ruben van Bommel and Gjivai Zechiël.

While Dumfries is currently the second captain, Xavi indicated that the leadership structure will be reassessed during the November international window.
