270 Nigerians to be evacuated from South Africa Thursday

The Federal Government of Nigeria is coordinating the evacuation of at least 270 Nigerians from South Africa due to recent xenophobic attacks. The first batch of evacuees is scheduled to arrive at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Thursday morning, following a flight from Johannesburg's O.R.

Tambo International Airport. The evacuation, initially set to commence on Monday, was postponed to Wednesday due to unforeseen logistical considerations, as explained by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

Upon arrival, the evacuees will undergo documentation profiling and receive appropriate assistance to reunite with their families. The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has reported an increase in the number of individuals seeking repatriation, with discussions ongoing with South African authorities to address immigration-related issues.

The evacuation is part of the Nigerian government's efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens in South Africa amidst growing concerns over attacks on foreign nationals.
