South Africa Leader Urges Oshiomhole to Avoid False Claims

Dr. Olusola Agbeniyi, representing the Yoruba Diaspora in South Africa, called on Senator Adam Oshiomhole to stop making false claims about xenophobic tensions in South Africa.

During a Senate plenary, Oshiomhole had suggested that Nigeria should respond firmly to the situation, citing the killing of Nigerians in South Africa. Agbeniyi, in an interview with Sunday Punch, refuted these claims, stating that no Nigerians were killed during the recent protests and attributing the confusion to widespread misinformation, particularly on social media.

He warned against forming opinions based on unverified reports and emphasized that while anti-immigrant protests occurred, they did not result in fatalities for Nigerians. Agbeniyi clarified that two Nigerians reported dead were not victims of the protests and highlighted that the narrative of foreigners taking jobs from South Africans is politically driven and misleading.

He also noted that many undocumented migrants in South Africa face challenges but do not necessarily take jobs from locals.
