Nigerian Diplomat Urges Religious Leaders to Aid Evacuations

Ajayi, a Nigerian diplomat, appealed to religious leaders and organizations, including Pastor Jerry Eze and the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), to help evacuate Nigerians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa. He acknowledged Pastor Enoch Adeboye's support in evacuating 500 Nigerians.

Ajayi stated that the situation, which peaked in July, forced many Nigerians to abandon their homes and businesses. He emphasized the need for coordinated efforts, as Nigerians reside across all nine provinces of South Africa.

Ajayi mentioned that several countries had begun evacuating their nationals due to the violence. He outlined five key areas of understanding reached between Nigerian and South African officials, including preventive mechanisms for safeguarding Nigerians and prosecuting offenders.

The Nigerian mission is compiling a list of affected Nigerians to assess damages and facilitate assistance. Ajayi reiterated the importance of public-spirited individuals and organizations in supporting the evacuation and welfare of affected Nigerians.
