Nigeria's National Assembly Boycotts South Africa Activities

The National Assembly of Nigeria has resolved to boycott all legislative activities organized by South Africa in response to recurring xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals. This decision was made following concerns raised by the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives regarding reports of Nigerians being killed, injured, displaced, and forced to abandon their businesses in South Africa.

A statement signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, indicated that these attacks have persisted despite appeals from the Nigerian government for South African authorities to take protective measures. The boycott includes suspending official visits, conferences, seminars, and other legislative activities hosted by South African authorities.

The National Assembly emphasized that this action is not meant to undermine Nigeria-South Africa relations but is a response to the safety and dignity of Nigerians. The Assembly called for urgent measures from the South African government to prevent further attacks and ensure the protection of Nigerians.

The boycott will remain in effect until further notice.
