Nigeria Considers Retaliation Over Treatment in South Africa

The Nigerian government, through Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, has expressed its displeasure with the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa, indicating that retaliatory measures are being considered. Ojukwu disclosed this during a press conference in Abuja, responding to inquiries about the situation.

She emphasized Nigeria's historical sacrifices for South Africa's independence and noted that the current harassment and attacks on Nigerians are unacceptable. The minister rejected claims that Nigerians are largely illegal migrants, asserting that many are legitimate business owners.

The government is in the process of evacuating its citizens, with Ojukwu stating that 500 Nigerians have been screened and cleared for repatriation, with a total of 1,000 indicating interest in returning home. President Bola Tinubu has directed the establishment of a crisis response unit within Nigeria's diplomatic mission in South Africa to assist affected citizens.

The evacuation process is ongoing, coordinated with national emergency management agencies to ensure adequate support for returnees.
