Shettima Urges Action Against Xenophobia in South Africa

During the 69th ordinary session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Sierra Leone, Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima addressed the issue of xenophobia in South Africa. He reminded South Africa that Nigeria made significant sacrifices to support the anti-apartheid struggle, including funding scholarships for South African students.

Shettima called for the issue of xenophobia to be placed on the agenda of the next African Union summit, highlighting the need for a united regional response to the growing intolerance against African migrants. He noted that Nigeria has condemned the recent violence against its citizens in South Africa, which has resulted in the deaths of at least four Nigerians.

The Nigerian government has evacuated 1,490 citizens from South Africa in response to these attacks. Shettima's remarks come amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa, with Nigeria warning of potential retaliatory measures if attacks on its citizens continue.
