South Africa Repatriates 586 Nigerians Amid Xenophobia

South Africa has initiated the repatriation of 586 Nigerians who were found to be residing illegally in the country. The first flight, carrying 258 Nigerians, arrived at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on June 11, 2026.

A second flight is scheduled for June 15, 2026, to transport the remaining individuals. The repatriation process was facilitated by the Nigerian High Commission, which issued emergency travel documents for the returnees.

Dr. Leon Schreiber, South Africa's Minister of Home Affairs, confirmed the commitment to enforce immigration laws and restore order. The Nigerian government, represented by Sola Enikanolaiy, emphasized its commitment to the welfare and safety of its citizens abroad, stating that it will not tolerate attacks on Nigerians.

The repatriation comes amid heightened efforts by South African authorities to tighten immigration enforcement due to concerns over undocumented migrants.
