Senate Engages Youth on Xenophobic Attacks Deadline

The Senate Committee on Diaspora, chaired by Aniekan Etim Bassei, held a high-level engagement forum with the Forum of Nigerian Youth Leaders in Political Parties on the issue of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. This meeting followed a formal letter from the youth forum expressing concerns over a controversial ultimatum for South Africans living in Nigeria to leave by July 31, 2026.

The youth leaders, led by Hon. Ez Onyebuchi, emphasized the need for concrete actions from the Nigerian government to protect its citizens abroad, citing ongoing violence and intimidation against Nigerians in South Africa.

They insisted that the July 31 deadline remains unchanged and called for immediate diplomatic engagement with South African authorities to ensure the safety of Nigerians. The Senate Committee acknowledged the frustrations of Nigerian youth and assured that the welfare of Nigerians living abroad is a priority, committing to continued oversight and advocacy for stronger protections.
