Nigeria Summons South African Envoy Over Xenophobic Attacks

The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has summoned the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria for a meeting in Abuja following recent xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerian nationals. The meeting, expected to take place on Monday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, is intended to address the increasing violence and mistreatment of Nigerians in South Africa.

The spokesperson for the Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, stated that the discussions will focus on the ongoing demonstrations in South Africa and the reported incidents of harassment and violence against Nigerian citizens. These incidents have raised significant concerns within the Nigerian government, prompting an appeal for restraint.

Reports indicate that the unrest in South Africa has included attempts to remove foreign children from schools, leading to fatalities, including two Nigerians. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged foreign nations to respect local laws and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to human rights.
