Nigeria Prioritizes Diplomacy Amid Xenophobic Attacks

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Sola Enikanolaye, has reaffirmed its commitment to diplomacy in response to xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. This declaration was made following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, where Enikanolaye briefed the President on discussions with South African envoy Ronald Lamola, sent by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Enikanolaye emphasized that while Nigeria prefers diplomatic solutions, all options remain available if negotiations do not ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens. He clarified that every Nigerian, regardless of immigration status, deserves protection, and noted that South Africa acknowledged this stance.

Enikanolaye reported that over 1,490 Nigerians have been evacuated, with many still wishing to return. He also mentioned ongoing discussions about compensation for returnees who lost property in South Africa, indicating that a form has been designed for affected Nigerians to fill out.
