Court Admits Video Evidence in Yelwata Killings Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has admitted a compact disc containing video statements from suspects involved in the Yelwata killings in Benue State. Prosecuting counsel Mariam Okori presented the disc, which was accepted by the court and marked as exhibit TW1.

The video features third defendant Haruna Abdullahi, who confirmed personal details and discussed losses suffered, including 100 cows and two children, allegedly at the hands of Fulani herders. Abdullahi mentioned a meeting convened to address these grievances, where contributions of N300,000 were made to seek revenge.

He also disclosed that he had previously sold an AK-47 rifle. Concerns were raised regarding the accuracy of the Hausa language interpretation of the video.

The trial judge, Joyce Abdulmalik, inquired about the defense's intention to apply for an interpreter. The next court date was adjourned after Abdullahi collapsed in the courtroom.

The prosecution's attempt to tender the video was met with objections, leading to a trial within a trial due to concerns over the video recording's integrity.
