Yelwata Attack Trial Stalls as Defendant Collapses in Court

The trial of nine suspects connected to the June 2025 Yelwata attack, which resulted in the deaths of 150 individuals, faced a setback when defendant Abdullahi Yakubu Adamu collapsed in court. The defendants, who face 57 terrorism-related charges, pleaded not guilty during their arraignment on February 2.

The trial, presided over by Justice Joyc Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court, was scheduled to continue with a trial within a trial to determine the admissibility of the defendants' confession statements. However, the session was disrupted around noon when Adamu slumped shortly after being brought to the courtroom.

Despite attempts by court officials and prison warders to revive him, he remained unresponsive. The defense counsel, led by Ibrahim Angulu SAN, requested urgent medical attention for Adamu, which was granted by the court.

The case has been adjourned until March 30-31, 2025, to allow for the necessary proceedings and medical care.
