Boat Tragedy in Niger State: Calls for Stricter Waterway Safety Enforcement

A tragic boat accident occurred in Gausawa Community, Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, as a wooden boat carrying 90 passengers capsized after colliding with a tree stump, resulting in the deaths of several victims. Overloading was identified as a possible cause of the mishap, with women and children among the casualties.

This incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of safety rules on waterways, as similar accidents have been reported in Mokwa, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kwara, Anambra, and Lagos states in recent months. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emphasized the need to discourage overloading and ensure the strict adherence to passenger capacity limits, as well as the compulsory provision of life jackets.

The lack of proper maintenance and safety standards in boats has been highlighted as contributing factors to such tragedies.
