Yiaga Africa Reports Low Voter Turnout in FCT Polls

Yiaga Africa, represented by Executive Director Samson Itodo and Director of Programs Cynthia Mbamalu, assessed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) polls, noting a largely peaceful atmosphere but significant low voter turnout. The polls commenced late, with accreditation starting around 10:00 AM instead of the scheduled time, causing confusion in several locations, particularly in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

Yiaga Africa deployed observers across 62 wards, documenting that polling units opened significantly behind schedule. Concerns were raised regarding the bimodal voter accreditation system and the lack of voter registration materials at certain polling units.

Additionally, the group criticized the redistribution of voters to newly created polling units without adequate notification. The report highlighted that polling units closed at 2:30 PM, contrary to guidelines requiring them to remain open until the last voter in line had voted.

Yiaga Africa urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency in result transmission and to engage the public effectively regarding voter education.
