Low Voter Turnout in FCT Area Council Elections

In the recent FCT area council elections, voter turnout was alarmingly low, with only 20 voters participating out of an expected 1,900 at polling units in Karu Ward, Abuja Municipal Area Council. Daniel Tyokua reported that residents were disillusioned with previous political leaders, particularly Illiya Musa, who allegedly failed to deliver on promises.

Many residents expressed a lack of interest in voting, believing that the results were predetermined. Complaints were raised regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which was criticized for not providing adequate materials for the election despite the funds allocated for conducting the elections.

Observers noted that INEC ad hoc staff were engaged in gossip rather than facilitating the voting process. An elderly woman was seen attempting to vote, while a policeman expressed frustration over the lack of voter participation.

Overall, the atmosphere was one of apathy, with many residents loitering around polling units rather than participating in the electoral process.
