EFCC Chairman Olukoyede Exposes Alarming Corruption Trends

Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), raised significant concerns regarding the persistent diversion of public funds by government officials during an event in Abuja celebrating Kanu Agabi's 80th birthday. Olukoyede disclosed that the EFCC receives more than 20,000 petitions related to public corruption each year, describing the volume and nature of these cases as disturbing.

He noted that some public officials enter service with minimal funds but are later linked to vast sums of money and properties. He stated, “Somebody will spend three to four years as a public servant, but before he got to office he had less than N100 thousand in his account.

By the time he’s leaving, we were able to trace several millions of dollars and naira to him.” Olukoyede emphasized the need for a cultural shift towards integrity to combat the thriving corruption in Nigeria, attributing the major challenges to systemic weaknesses and societal tolerance of corrupt practices.
