Youth Leaders Back Prof. Amupitan Amid Removal Calls

Youth leaders have passed a vote of confidence in Prof. Amupitan, rejecting calls for his removal, which were based on allegations of partisanship linked to the Progress Congress (APC). The statement, signed by Deputy Spokesperson Mirabel Ashara, condemned the protests as misguided and politically motivated, lacking credible evidence.

The group highlighted Prof. Amupitan's extensive track record in academia, public service, and legal practice, asserting that it speaks volumes about his capacity to lead the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in a neutral and transparent manner, especially with the upcoming 2027 general elections. They noted that the allegations of partisanship were not substantiated by concrete evidence.

The forum also emphasized the independence of INEC and urged Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to exercise restraint to avoid actions that could erode trust in democratic institutions. They called on relevant authorities to remain vigilant against attempts to destabilize the electoral system through misinformation and undue political pressure.
