Labour Party Chairmen Reject Calls for INEC Chairman's Resignation

On Tuesday, Labour Party (LP) chairmen across Nigeria rejected calls for the resignation of Prof. Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

They cautioned against conducting fresh congresses, emphasizing the need for due process in addressing grievances. Abdurrahim Chindo, the LP's national executive committee member, announced this position during a press conference in Abuja, amidst growing political tensions following allegations against Amupitan related to pro-President Bola Tinubu sentiments.

The LP chairmen distanced themselves from demands for Amupitan's resignation, insisting that any grievances should follow proper procedures rather than emotional social media reactions. They also raised concerns about a rival faction led by Nenadi Usman attempting to conduct new congresses at the ward and local government levels, warning INEC against succumbing to pressure.

The chairmen stressed that any congress must comply with electoral laws and that the legitimacy of such congresses is paramount for the stability of the party.
