ISEEA Calls for Enhanced Youth Mental Health Support in Nigeria

The Initiative for Self Esteem Education and Advocacy (ISEEA) called for improved mental health support for adolescents and young people in Nigeria. Founder and Executive Director Rosemary Ochiwu made this appeal in Abuja during a press conference on the 2026 National Adolescent and Youth Mental Health Week.
She urged the federal government, schools, parents, and other stakeholders to prioritize youth mental health by providing accessible support services and adequate funding. Ochiwu emphasized the importance of creating safe environments for young people to discuss their mental health struggles.
Mr Akim Olanipekun, representing the Ministry of Youth Development, stated that mental health is a fundamental aspect of youth development and called for young people's active involvement in developing solutions. He stressed the need to transition from discussions to concrete actions.
Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, President of the African University of Science and Technology, also highlighted the significance of mental health in overall development.
