National Theatre Launches Initiative for Northern Artists

The National Theatre is working to integrate artists from Northern Nigeria into the country's creative economy by launching a program that emphasizes funding, financial literacy, and practical skills. General Manager Tola Akerele announced this initiative at the Kano Creative Summit held on Thursday.

She stated that the program aims to address the disparity in access to opportunities for artists outside major cities like Lagos. Akerele emphasized that Kano, known for its contributions to Nigeria's cultural life and home to Kannywood, deserves equal infrastructure and support.

During the summit, Audu Maikori, Chief Strategic Advisor on Intergovernmental Affairs to the Governor of Kaduna State and Chairman of Chocolate City Group, discussed the importance of intellectual property protection for creatives. Kano State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hajiya Aisha Saji, highlighted the region's rich history in craftsmanship and the need for structural support to transform cultural talent into sustainable businesses.

The theme of the summit, ‘Beyond Lagos,’ calls for expanding Nigeria’s creative economy across all regions.
