Nigeria Sees 1,347 Road Traffic Deaths in Q1 2026

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that in the first quarter of 2026, Nigeria experienced 1,347 deaths due to road traffic accidents. This figure represents a slight decrease in total road crashes, with 2,720 incidents recorded, a 0.40% reduction from the 2,731 crashes reported in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Despite this marginal improvement, the human toll remains alarming, with 8,500 individuals sustaining injuries during this period. Adult males accounted for the majority of injuries, with 6,293 cases, representing 73% of the total injuries.

Adult females recorded 1,800 injuries (21%), while male children had 254 injuries and female children had 228 injuries, together making up 3% of the total. The data indicates that adult males also represented the majority of fatalities, with 1,045 deaths (78%), while adult females accounted for 231 deaths (17%), and male and female children recorded 31 and 40 deaths, respectively.

This data underscores the ongoing severity of road transport accidents in Nigeria.
