Nollywood Loses Ten Actors in First Eight Months of 2026

In 2026, the Nigerian film industry faced significant losses, with ten actors passing away between January and August. Ajara Lasisi, known as Aunty Ajara, died on February 5 from a liver-related illness, recognized for her roles in Yoruba films.

Bamidele Oluwatope, also known as Okemesi, passed on February 24 due to complications from medication during hospital treatment. Oby Kechere, a prominent actress and filmmaker, died on April 27 after a prolonged illness; she was known for her role in the 2002 comedy classic "Aki na Ukwa" and served as Vice Chairman of the Directors Guild of Nigeria's Abuja chapter.

Alexx Ekubo, who died on May 11 at Evercare Hospital in Lagos from liver cancer, gained fame after being the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest and starred in films like "Weekend Getaway." Veteran actor Patrick Okoye also died in late May after a protracted illness, marking a period of mourning across the industry.
