Nigeria's English Proficiency Ranked Low Among Africa

In a recent ranking of twelve African countries based on English proficiency, Nigeria is highlighted as maintaining a low status despite some improvements. The report indicates that Nigeria's English is often incomprehensible, necessitating translation, which reflects a broader challenge in the country.

Kenya, in contrast, ranks high in English proficiency. Malawi has dropped to a low category this year, despite English being an official language, as the majority of the population primarily speaks Chichewa.

In Cameroon, the ongoing conflict complicates students' ability to improve their English skills, as the population predominantly speaks French. Sudan faces similar challenges due to political issues affecting education, focusing mainly on Arabic.

In Senegal, while French is the primary language, English is taught mainly in schools, resulting in adults lacking fluency. Benin's heavy focus on French in schools limits exposure to English in daily life.
