Niger State Provides 24-Hour Solar Power to 180 Communities

The Niger State Government, under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, has launched a significant initiative to provide 24-hour solar power to 180 communities that have endured decades without reliable electricity supply. This project, described as a major breakthrough, involves the deployment of solar mini-grid renewable energy solutions across the state.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc, a subsidiary of the Niger Electricity Distribution Company, commended the government's efforts, highlighting the importance of this initiative for communities previously outside stable grid supply. The project aims to address long-standing energy access challenges, particularly for critical public facilities such as government houses and hospitals.

Chijiok Okwuokeny, the Managing Director of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc, noted that this initiative aligns with the decentralized electricity framework introduced by the Electricity Act 2023. The project reflects a broader shift in Nigeria's energy landscape, with state governments increasingly taking charge of power planning to enhance energy access and reliability.
