Niger State Launches Solar Mini-Grids for 180 Communities

The Niger State Government, under the leadership of Governor Moham Umaru Bago, has launched a solar mini-grid initiative that supplies 24-hour electricity to 180 communities that have endured decades without reliable power. This project marks a significant breakthrough in addressing prolonged blackouts across the state.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc, represented by its Chief Business Officer, Chijiok Okwuokeny, commended the initiative as a major intervention for communities outside the reach of stable grid supply. The project includes critical public facilities such as government houses and hospitals, including the IBB Specialist Hospital.

The initiative aligns with the recently introduced Electricity Act 2023, promoting decentralized power solutions. Sam Odekina, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, expressed eagerness to collaborate with the state government on integrating mini-grid solutions into the local electricity market, emphasizing the importance of sustainable energy access for communities that have relied on costly diesel generators.
