Niger Residents Suffer Power Shortages Despite Four Plants

Residents of Niger State are experiencing severe power shortages despite the presence of four major power plants: Kainji (760 MW), Zungeru (700 MW), Shiroro (600 MW), and Jebba (578 MW). The erratic electricity supply has led to significant economic and social challenges, particularly as Ramadan approaches in 2026.

Abdullateef Abdulwahid, a welder in Minna, expressed frustration over the unreliable power supply, which has hindered his ability to complete work. Abubakar Abdul Kuta from Sabon Gari highlighted the increasing electricity bills from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) despite the lack of stable supply.

Residents report being in darkness for days, affecting their businesses and daily lives. The Niger State Water Board also struggles with power issues, impacting water supply.

Hauwawu Muhammad and Usman Garba emphasized the dire need for government intervention to address the power crisis, which has worsened living conditions and led to psychological distress among families.
