NCoS Confirms Cholera Outbreak, Two Inmates Dead

A cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre has resulted in the deaths of two inmates. Chief Superintendent of Corrections JN Osuji reported that the first case was identified on September 17, 2026, when an inmate exhibited symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea.

Following this, the inmate was taken to the facility's medical centre, and emergency health protocols were initiated the next day. Laboratory tests conducted with the Kano State public health authorities confirmed the outbreak on September 23.

One inmate died within the custodial centre, while the other succumbed at the Kano State Infectious Diseases Hospital. Sylvester Nwakuche, the Controller-General of Corrections, has mandated ongoing medical interventions and dispatched a team of senior medical staff from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) National Headquarters for monitoring and support.

Nwakuche is also collaborating with the Kano State Government to implement additional preventive measures to avert future outbreaks. The NCoS has assured that inmates are receiving adequate medical care.
