NCoS Addresses Cholera Outbreak at Kano Custodial Centre

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) reported a cholera outbreak at the Kano Custodial Centre, confirmed through laboratory investigations conducted on September 23 by its medical team in collaboration with Kano State public health authorities. The outbreak was first detected on September 17 when an inmate exhibited symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea and was admitted to the centre’s medical facility.

During the outbreak, two inmates died, one at the custodial centre and the other at the Kano State Infectious Diseases Hospital. NCoS Service Public Relations Officer, Jane Osuji, stated that the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, was promptly informed and directed that necessary health measures be sustained.

A coordinated response helped contain the outbreak, with no further deaths recorded since the diagnosis. Additional preventive measures were introduced in collaboration with the Kano State Government.

Healthcare services remain available across custodial facilities, and a team of senior medical personnel has been dispatched for ongoing monitoring.
