Book Buzz Foundation Launches 20 Nigerian Children's Books

The Book Buzz Foundation unveiled 20 new Nigerian children’s picture books on October 7, aimed at promoting reading, cultural diversity, and inclusion among young Nigerians. The books were produced under the Nigerian Picture Book Project (NPBP) with support from the European Union and feature contributions from young Nigerian writers and illustrators across the six geopolitical zones.
Lola Shoneyin, Director of the Book Buzz Foundation, stated that the project aims to bridge gaps in Nigerian children’s literature and provide stories that reflect local cultures and experiences. The initiative also focuses on diversity, including characters with disabilities, to foster empathy among young readers.
Dr Aisha Garba, Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, emphasized the importance of culturally relevant books in strengthening foundational learning. She urged stakeholders to ensure the books reach children beyond the launch.
The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council also supported the initiative, highlighting its potential impact on children's literature in Nigeria.
