Akwa Ibom Chief Judge Frees 100 Inmates in 2026

In the first quarter of 2026, Hon. Justice Ekaet Fabian Obot, the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, released a total of 100 inmates from four medium security custodial facilities.

This decision followed a weeklong inspection of the facilities and was influenced by the health conditions of several inmates. Notably, 20 inmates at the Uyo custodial center were suffering from serious health issues, including Godwin Franci Etim, who is battling tuberculosis.

The Chief Judge emphasized the need for compassion in considering the release of inmates, particularly those with health challenges, and criticized the practice of police officers obtaining remand orders without following through with court proceedings. She urged magistrates to take proactive steps to fix dates for cases and notify relevant parties to ensure due process is followed.

The release of inmates is also aimed at encouraging good conduct and preventing recidivism.
