Akwa Ibom Introduces AI for Enhanced Court Efficiency

The Akwa Ibom State Judiciary has commenced the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in court proceedings to enhance the efficiency of case management. The initiative was launched on Tuesday at the judiciary headquarters in Uyo by Justice Ekaet F.

Fabian Obot. The program, which is in its pilot phase, involves a week-long training session conducted by a technical team from Lexscript AI.

This training aims to assess and design courtroom installations for audio capture and transcription equipment. Justice Obot emphasized the importance of embracing modern technology to improve the administration of justice while cautioning that AI should not replace judicial discretion.

The AI system will assist in legal research, case management, and court administration, significantly reducing the burden of traditional longhand writing. The program is part of a pilot initiative by the National Judicial Institute, which selected Akwa Ibom among six states in Nigeria to improve the capacity of judicial staff through AI applications.
