Senate Threatens to Withhold 2026 Budget Approval Over Debts

During a budget defense session on Thursday, the Nigerian Senate, led by the Senate Committee on Finance Chairman Sani Musa, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the federal government's handling of the 2025 budget, citing unresolved liabilities dating back to 2024. The Senate noted that N2.2 trillion is currently owed to contractors, which they described as unacceptable.

Senator Danjuma Goje raised concerns about public finance management, particularly regarding revenue generation and the removal of fuel subsidies. The committee revealed that security agencies have complained about insufficient funds due to delays in fund release.

Lawmakers urged the federal government to reassess its budget framework, arguing it has fallen short of expectations. They recommended adopting a performance-based budget system to improve efficiency.

The Senate reiterated that it would withhold consideration of the 2026 budget submission until it receives satisfactory explanations and assurances regarding better budget implementation and prompt fund disbursement.
