Nigerian Senate Threatens to Withhold Approval of Accountant-General's 2026 Budget

The Nigerian Senate, particularly the Committee on Finance chaired by Senator Sani Musa, has issued a warning to withhold approval of the Accountant-General's 2026 budget proposal. This action stems from persistent delays in fund releases to ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), resulting in unpaid contractors.

The Senate expressed frustration over poor budget execution, which has crippled government operations. Senator Danladi Goje highlighted concerns about the handling of public funds, especially revenue generation and the removal of fuel subsidies.

Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, representing the Accountant-General's office, explained the challenges faced in fund disbursement and assured lawmakers of ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency. The Senate emphasized the need for concrete assurances and improvements in fund releases before considering the budget proposal for approval.
