Super Eagles Coach Targets Michael Kayode for AFCON 2027

Eric Chelle, the head coach of the Super Eagles, is focusing on securing Michael Kayode as part of his strategy to enhance Nigeria's squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Kayode, a 21-year-old defender currently playing for Brentford, is eligible to represent Nigeria due to his Nigerian parentage, despite having previously featured for Italy at the U-18, U-19, and U-21 levels.

The Nigeria Football Federation is exploring the possibility of securing Kayode's international allegiance. Chelle has expressed admiration for Kayode's physical presence, energy, and long throw ability, viewing him as a strong addition ahead of the tournament.

Kayode's future with Italy appears uncertain, especially after the recent departure of Italian head coach Gennaro Gattuso, which has revived Nigeria's hopes of securing the player. Kayode has progressed through the ranks of Italian football, spending seven years at Juventus before moving to lower-tier AC Gozzano and subsequently joining Brentford on loan in January 2025, with a permanent deal set to be completed by June 2030.
