Chel Targets Kayode for Nigeria's AFCON 2027 Squad

Eric Chel, the head coach of Nigeria's national football team, is keen on recruiting Michael Kayode, a 21-year-old defender currently playing for Brentford, to enhance the squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The Nigeria Football Federation is exploring the possibility of securing Kayode's international allegiance, as he has previously represented Italy at youth levels, including U-18, U-19, and U-21.

Chel is a strong admirer of Kayode's physical presence, energy, and long throw ability, viewing him as a valuable addition for the upcoming continental tournament. Despite Kayode's previous inclination to represent Italy, the recent absence of senior call-ups under new Italian head coach Gennaro Gattuso has revived Nigeria's hopes of securing his services.

Kayode has spent seven years in the Juventus academy and has made 34 appearances for AC Gozzano, scoring twice, before joining Brentford on loan in January 2025, with a permanent deal set to be completed by May 2030.
