Opposition Coalition for 2027 Election Faces Collapse

The effort by Nigeria's opposition parties to present a unified candidate against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election has collapsed, primarily due to the intransigence of leading figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. Both former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have failed to agree on a consensus candidate, leading to a fragmented opposition.

Other candidates, including Governor Seyi Makinde, Omoyele Sowore, and Adewole Adebayo, have also opted to pursue their ambitions independently. This division is underscored by the recent publication of the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) final list of presidential candidates, which includes over 12 contenders.

Earlier in the year, there was optimism for a coalition, but this has since diminished, particularly after Obi left the ADC in May to join the NDC, while Atiku remained with the ADC. A summit held on August 31 by six opposition parties to discuss cooperation saw the absence of Atiku, Obi, and Makinde, further highlighting the rift within the opposition.
