Opposition Candidates Firm on 2027 Presidential Race

Several prominent opposition candidates, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, have resisted pressure to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race. This resistance complicates the G-100 Alliance's initiative to establish a single candidate from the opposition before their September 30 deadline.

The G-100, a coalition of political groups, recently convened at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, aiming to foster cooperation among opposition parties. Ambassador Umanu Elijah stated that discussions are ongoing, and he is optimistic about reaching a consensus candidate soon.

However, the commitment of major candidates to their presidential ambitions suggests that achieving this goal may be challenging. An ally of Atiku indicated that he is open to political cooperation but remains focused on his presidential aspirations, having previously contributed to the formation of the African Democratic Congress as part of the opposition coalition.
