Challenges for Atiku and Obi's Coalition Ahead of 2027

Umar Ardo, a political strategist and Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, explained the challenges facing a potential coalition between Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Ardo noted that Atiku is unlikely to withdraw from the race, despite the possibility of retaining his support base if he did.

Conversely, he mentioned that Obi might be more willing to step down, but doing so could alienate his supporters. Ardo emphasized that resolving these issues is crucial for any merger between the two opposition figures.

He also stated that even without a coalition, both Atiku and Obi possess the capacity to mount a strong challenge against the incumbent President Bola Tinubu, depending on their individual strategies.
