AU Launches Pre-Election Assessment Mission in Nigeria

The African Union (AU) commenced a seven-day pre-election and needs assessment mission in Nigeria on September 13, 2026, led by Demeke Hassen, the former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia. The mission aims to evaluate the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) preparedness for the 2027 general elections, identify potential gaps, and provide recommendations to ensure credible, transparent, peaceful, and inclusive elections.

Hassen emphasized the importance of quality preparations prior to election day, examining the entire electoral cycle, including pre-election activities, election-day operations, and results management. The mission will assess unresolved legal and administrative issues affecting the elections and the coordination between INEC and security agencies.

Hassen called for assurances regarding the credibility of the voter register, adequate funding for INEC, and effective logistical arrangements. The AU delegation is also focused on ensuring that security measures adequately protect all stakeholders while maintaining INEC's independence.
