EU to Send Experts for Nigeria's 2027 Elections

The European Union (EU), represented by Ambassador Gautier Mignot, announced the deployment of an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) to Nigeria for the 2027 general elections. This mission will consist of two to four independent experts, formally accredited as observers by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mignot clarified that the EU had received an official invitation from INEC on April 17, 2026, and responded positively on July 28, 2026. The EEM will evaluate Nigeria's electoral process against international, regional, and national standards for democratic elections.

A final report with recommendations for improving the electoral framework will be submitted to the government and potentially made public. Mignot dismissed claims that the EU's decision not to deploy a larger observation mission was due to security concerns or negative treatment of its observers, labeling such reports as speculative.

He emphasized that the EU's decision was based on annual reviews of electoral missions and ongoing consultations with Nigerian authorities.
