EU to Deploy Electoral Expert Mission for Nigeria 2027 Elections

The European Union (EU) has announced that it will deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) for Nigeria's 2027 general elections, refuting claims that it rejected an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS issued a clarification on Monday, stating that reports suggesting the EU declined INEC's invitation were inaccurate.

INEC formally invited the EU on April 17, 2026, and the EU responded on July 28, confirming its participation with a mission of 2-4 independent experts who will be accredited as observers. This mission represents a more limited engagement compared to the full-scale Election Observation Missions previously deployed during the 2023 and 2019 elections.

The EU emphasized that it had not rejected INEC's invitation, as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, aiming to bolster confidence in the electoral process through collaboration with domestic and international stakeholders.
