Bishops Endorse Tinubu for 2027, Reject Financial Influence

Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, the President-General of the Charismatic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, defended the group's endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election. During an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Kawas insisted that the endorsement was not influenced by financial incentives, stating, “Today, this endorsement has not given us any one naira.” He alleged that certain individuals were sponsoring banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism to tarnish Tinubu’s reputation and undermine his government.

Kawas compared the current situation to that of former President Goodluck Jonathan, suggesting that similar tactics were used to discredit him. He emphasized that the bishops believed they were led to support Tinubu, dismissing the notion that financial benefits should dictate political endorsements.

He also referenced their previous support for Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, despite Obi's stance on not distributing money to Nigerians.
