Akpabio Assures Legislative Duties Amid 2027 Elections

As the 2027 general elections approach, Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, has addressed concerns regarding the potential conflict between electioneering and legislative responsibilities in the 10th National Assembly. Speaking at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, after a meeting with All Progressives Congress stakeholders, Akpabio stated that the National Assembly will not cease operations due to campaigning.

He emphasized that lawmakers are elected for a four-year term and must fulfill their duties throughout this period. Akpabio proposed that legislative work could be conducted during parliamentary hours, while political campaigns could be scheduled for afternoons or evenings.

He expressed confidence that the assembly could maintain its legislative quality and consistency despite members engaging in campaigns. The assembly is set to return from its annual recess in September 2026, facing a demanding legislative agenda, and Akpabio reassured that legislative functions would not be compromised by the electoral process.
