INEC Unveils Timetable for 2027 Elections in Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the timetable for the 2027 general elections, detailing seven key activities and dates to monitor. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan made the announcement during a press conference in Abuja on February 13, 2026.

According to the timetable, the governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027. This announcement aligns with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, specifically Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates that the commission publish election notices no later than 360 days before the appointed date.

The 2027 elections will cover various offices, including the presidency, vice presidency, governorship, deputy governorship, and state assembly members. INEC aims to enhance the electoral process by continuing voter registration, conducting party primaries, and deploying technology for voter verification and result collation.

The commission is also addressing ongoing discussions regarding electoral reforms and has called on federal lawmakers to expedite the consideration of the electoral amendment bill.
