INEC Addresses 2027 Election Concerns Amid Ramadan Timing

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to concerns regarding the timetable for the 2027 General Election, assuring Nigerians of fairness and equal access to the electoral process. The presidential and national assembly elections are set for February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.

Political parties are to conduct their primaries between May 22 and June 20, 2026. Concerns have been raised, particularly by Muslims, about the elections coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan, which may affect voter turnout and slow down electoral activities.

Former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party has urged INEC to reconsider the February 20 date, highlighting the spiritual significance of Ramadan. INEC Chairman Haruna explained that the timetable was drawn in accordance with the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act of 2022, emphasizing their commitment to a transparent and credible electoral process.
