Nigerian Army Urges Neutrality for 2027 Elections

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 General Elections, the Nigerian Army has mandated its personnel to maintain political neutrality and professionalism while supporting election security operations. This directive was issued during the 81 Division Nigerian Army Sensitisation Lecture on the Conduct of Armed Forces Personnel, held on September 1, 2026.

Major General AA Babalola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, emphasized the military's constitutional role in election security, which is regulated and requires lawful authority. He reminded personnel of their subordination to civil authority as outlined in Sections 217(2)(c) and 218 of the Constitution.

The GOC stressed the importance of understanding legal frameworks governing military conduct, including the Armed Forces Act and the Electoral Act. He also highlighted the necessity for cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force, the primary agency for maintaining public order during elections.

Major General Babalola warned against political bias and the consequences of unlawful conduct, urging commanders to ensure their troops are well-informed about their responsibilities.
