INEC Consults on 2027 Elections Amid Ramadan Concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is consulting on the scheduling of the 2027 general elections due to a potential overlap with Ramadan. The presidential election is set for February 20, 2027, while the governorship elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.

Concerns have been raised by political stakeholders, including former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who noted that the proposed dates coincide with Ramadan 1448. INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan emphasized the need for compliance with the Nigerian Constitution and electoral laws, which stipulate that elections must occur not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the term of the last officeholder.

INEC's spokesperson, Moham Haruna, stated that the commission is committed to addressing public concerns and ensuring transparency in the electoral process. The National Assembly is set to hold an emergency plenary session on February 16, 2026, to discuss potential legislative interventions regarding the election schedule.
