Nigeria and EU Strengthen Ties Ahead of 2027 Elections

Nigeria and the European Union have engaged in discussions to enhance bilateral cooperation in democracy, migration, security, and sustainable development. This meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Abuja, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot.

They emphasized the significance of Nigeria's upcoming 2027 general elections, with Mignot outlining the EU's plan to deploy an expert mission to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rather than a conventional electoral observation mission. The EU will continue its support for INEC, media, civil society organizations, political parties, and the National Assembly to strengthen electoral processes.

Discussions also covered migration management, with progress towards formalizing a readmission agreement between Nigeria and the EU. Additionally, they addressed international cooperation on various initiatives, including climate action and food security, reaffirming their commitment to multilateralism and collaboration on global challenges.
