EU Confirms Electoral Expert Mission for Nigeria's 2027 Elections

The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS issued a statement denying reports that it would withdraw from observing Nigeria's 2027 general elections. The delegation, led by EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot, clarified that it would instead deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) consisting of two to four independent experts.

This decision followed a formal invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) dated April 17, 2026, with the EU responding on July 28. The EEM will assess whether the electoral process aligns with international, regional, and national commitments regarding democratic elections.

The delegation rejected claims that its decision was influenced by worsening security or hostile treatment of its observers after the 2023 elections, labeling such reasons as speculations. The EU emphasized that its decision to conduct an EEM is based on annual evaluations of electoral missions and will be further discussed with relevant Nigerian authorities.
